Leather

My inspiration

When I started making baby booties, I thought they would look great with a leather bottom, and so I got leather scraps from local artisan shops in Daikanyama (Tokyo, Japan) and learned through online videos how to work with leather. I bought the basic tools and through a lot of trial and error, finally got the stitches and spacing right in marrying the piece of leather with the yarn. Oh and I guess I should explain why I started making baby booties — My friend just had a baby at the time and I wanted to make something besides the usual tuque so I decided on footwear!

My work

I love working with leather because it smells great (except after laser engraving on it, then it smells pretty bad) and adds a certain luxurious look and feel to the item. Besides baby booties, I've also experimented with making bow earrings out of leather, and I've been using leather to create tags with my logo on them for adding to things like baby booties and headbands.

I'm still quite new to working with leather, and I continue to explore different ways to incorporate leather with other mediums. Stay tuned for more in the future!
